It is funny to hear the arguments that patients present when they visit the office due to the fall of one or more brackets during the normal orthodontic process.
Below we will find our top number 5 of the most curious excuses:
1. He was riding the motorcycle and the wind knocked him over. 2. I was drinking water…would it be very cold?? 3. It got tangled in my blouse, would it be stuck properly? 4. I hit a fence right on the bracket and it came off. 5. It hasn't fallen off, but it is loose.
It is worth clarifying that the fall of a bracket is one of the most frequent complications of orthodontic treatments and at the same time one of those that generates the most delays in their duration. Once the bracket is no longer attached to the tooth, it stops moving while the others continue to do so.
Among the reasons why braces can fall we find: your teeth collide with one of the braces. For this reason we will ask you to bite well before the check ends and to report any "discomfort" when doing so. If we see that due to the position of your tooth there is any contact that could affect the stability of your brackets, it will be indicated to place bite "lifters", which are protectors made of resin that will wear out over the days until Let's remove them permanently.
Other causes are eating restricted foods such as gum, nougat, ice, etc., biting nails, biting hard objects. There are some conditions of dental enamel in which alterations of its structure occur such as Hypoplasias, Fluorosis, etc. But the most common cause is Poor Oral Hygiene. If we allow bacterial plaque to accumulate around the brackets, not only do we run the risk of developing white spots (cavities), but the acids that the bacteria produce can leak the bond between the tooth and the bracket, affecting its stability. We therefore invite you to ensure that your hygiene is impeccable.
